Dannebrog

Nebraska's Danish Capital!

Dannebrog is located in Howard County just north of Grand Island, between St Paul and Wood River off of Hwy 11, near the Loup River.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 337, an increase of 13 since 1990.

Dannebrog was founded by Lars Hannibal, president of the Danish Land and Homestead Company. In 1872 permission had been given to have a post office. The name "Carthage" was suggested, but Hannibal, the first postmaster, said he would not live in a place with that name, and wanted instead, "Dannebrog," for the Danish flag.
