Elgin

Elgin is located in Antelope County west of Norfolk, between Neligh and Albion on Hwy 14.

William Eggleston, one of the early settlers, circulated a petition to establish a post office in 1883. When it was granted, Gene Gailey opened a postal guide at random, pointed blindly with his index finger, opened his eyes to see "ELGIN" (Elgin, Illinois, that is). Thus the name for the post office was determined.

Economic growth in Elgin are products of agriculture, including cattle feeding, hog feeding, and crop production.

A variety of hunting and fishing opportunities exist in the Elgin area. Fisherman can enjoy excellent fishing at Flobert's Lake northeast of town, Penn Lake in Neligh, Goose Lake west of town, and Calamus Reservoir located 75 miles away in Burwell. Hunting for whitetail deer, pheasants, quail, ducks, geese, and turkeys as well as coyotes and raccoons are also popular recreational activities.
