Gordon is located in Sheridan County east of Chadron, between Rushville and Merriman on US Hwy 20, near Hoover Lake and Alkali Lake.

The village of Gordon was incorporated on November 19, 1885.

Named for John Gordon, whose ill-fated pilgrimage into that area in 1875 had resulted in the loss of his wagon train and possessions. The Village of Gordon was incorporated in 1885.

Today, Gordon is rich in history. Some sites to view some of this history are located at the Mari Sandoz Room Museum, Scamahorn Museum, The Tri State Old Time Cowboys Memorial Museum and the Bowring Ranch.
