Imperial is located in Chase County (of which it is the county seat) between Champion and Wauneta, situated 24 miles east of the Colorado boarder along US Hwy 6.The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,932, a decrease of 75 since 1990. On March 2, 1886 a plat was surveyed and filled. Built on land homesteaded by Thomas Mercier and M.L. Goodrich. Popular recreation areas surrounding Imperial are the Champion Lake State Recreation Area, Enders Reservoir State Rec Area and Rock Creek Lake State Recreation Area.
