Sutton is located in Clay County east of Hastings, between Harvard and Fairmont along US Hwy 6.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 1,219, a decrease of 134 since 1990.

The first settler was Luther French who moved there in June 1870. By August 10, 1871, he had a town laid out with around 600 lots. Named Sutton from a town in Massachusetts with the same name.
