Tilden is located in Madison County between Norfolk and Neligh along US Hwy 20 and the Elkhorn River.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 881, a decrease of 14 since 1990.
The earliest settlers located in the area in the fall of 1868, with 10 more families following in the spring. Incorporation was completed in October of 1885. Named Tilden in 1887, after a presidential candidate by the name of Samual J. Tilden.
