West Point is located in Cuming County (of which it is the county seat), situated at the junction of Hwy 32, Hwy 9 and US Hwy 275, along the Elkhorn River north of Fremont.
West Point, began in March 1857 when some Omaha businessmen and a group of Easterners formed the "Nebraska Settlement Association." A committee was appointed to scout the Elkhorn Valley for a good town site. Uriah, John, and Andrew Bruner, and William Sexauer, chose a spot on the bend of the river, which they originally called "New Philadelphia."
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 3,340, an increase of 90 since 1990.
Westpoint is mostly a trade and manufacturing community today. Known throughout the state for its outstanding livestock exhibition, the 68th annual Cuming County Fair is held in West Point in August. Activities include: community theater productions, musicals, baseball, horse shows, and an annual city-wide garage sale. "Octoberfest" is a tribute to the town's German heritage.
