York is located in York County (of which it is the county seat) 35 miles west of Lincoln along Hwy 81 near the West Fork of the Big Blue River and the Blue River State Recreation Area.

West of town is the Kirkpatrick Wildlife Basin.

York's beginnings dates back to 1869, when the South Platte Land Company founded the town. English and German settlers named it after a familiar eastern city, York, Pennsylvania.

The City of York has seven parks with recreational areas covering over 125 acres. Facilities include picnic grounds with large shelters, fire grates, restrooms and playground equipment. Sports facilities include: four lighted softball and four baseball fields, two lighted football and two soccer fields, ten lighted tennis courts, four lighted sand volleyball courts, an Olympic size outdoor pool, horseshoes, fishing and boating, hiking, archery and ice skating. The Children's Museum, located in the Auditorium, provides hands-on fun for early childhood education.
