Once owned by the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody and the Wells Fargo Company,
Concord's own Abbot Downing & Company produced and sold these famous stagecoaches worldwide. One of their largest orders came in 1856 from the Overland Mail Stage, owned by John Butterfield Company. Three years after their first order, the mail stage traveled from
San Francisco to
Tipton in a record twenty-three days.
These fine coaches, made with careful workmanship, were constructed from fine materials of oak, ash, basswood, several coats of paint. They had delicate scrollwork on the door panels and often portraits of female singers were applied to the footboards.
To catch a glimpse of one of these fine examples of American History, one can find several of the restored coaches in the Concord area including at the Historical Museums, Canterbury Shaker Village, and the Concord Group Insurance Company.
