Discussions regarding the construction of a state capitol began in 1814 and was actually erected in
Concord,
Merrimack County, in 1819 by state prison inmates from 1,650 tons of locally quarried granite. More than 180 portraits of well-known New Hampshirites are displayed within the building, along with the colors of New Hampshire regiments.
Today the State House is the oldest state capitol in which the legislative branches meet in their original chambers.
