The Bergen Museum explores the region's roots and identity by promoting its regional artists through its Youth Art Gallery, Mastodon Music Society, and visual arts exhibitions. The collection is composed of Bergen County historical and local artwork including the Alexanders Mural, paintings, photographs, the Mastodon skeletons, and substantial collection of donated artwork and scientific objects. The Museum has two mastodon skeletons. The Hackensack mastodon was discovered in 1962 during the construction of Route 80. The Dwarskill Mastodon was discovered in 1973. They were excavated by some of the original founders of the Museum.
