This unit of
Morristown National Historic Park, which was created in 1933 as the first national historical park in the U.S., was the site of the Continental armies encampment in the winters of 1777 and 1779-80. General
George Washington selected Jockey Hollow for its ample firewood and water supplies. The area was wooded then as it is now, but soldiers quickly stripped the forest to build shelters (five of which have been reconstructed). The Jockey Hollow Unit offers an automobile tour over a 2-mile loop road.
Located in north central New Jersey, west of I-287.
