The Borough of Lakehurst is located in
Ocean County, in the
Shore Region, along State Highway 70 near the Fort Dix military reservation.
The town is adjacent to the Lakehurst Naval Air Warfare Center, where the historic Hindenburg disaster occurred in the 1930's. The publicity surrounding this one event influenced the direction taken by the fledgling aircraft industry towards 'heavier-than-air' over 'lighter-than-air' vehicles. The hydrogen-filled German Hindenburg, the world's largest dirigible at that time, caught fire and burned up in a few minutes.
Lakehurst is part of the Monmouth-Ocean, New Jersey metro area.
