Starting in 1867, St. Joseph's Hospital expanded to encompass a tertiary medical center, an acute care hospital, a nursing home and a number of ambulatory sites and clinics to become St. Joseph's Healthcare System, a comprehensive healthcare organization serving northern New Jersey. St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center is university affiliated and has nearly 200 residents and 100 medical students. System-wide, St. Joseph's has more than 1,000 beds, 5,000 employees and 1,000 physicians including 200 full-time.
