The City of Salem is the county seat for Salem County. It is west of Vineland between Deepwater and Quinton along Highway 49 on the banks of the Salem River at Salem Cove and the Delaware River. Salem is near Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Salem River Wildlife Management Area, and Fort Mott State Park.

Salem is part of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-New Jersey metro area.
