Aztec

City of History, Humor & Warm Handshakes

Aztec is located in San Juan County (of which it is the county seat), and in the Northwest New Mexico region just northeast of Farmington between Farmington and Dulce along US Highway 550 near the San Juan River and the Colorado state line.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,134, an increase of 654 since 1990.

The first occupants of this land were the Anasazi, a name derived by the Navajo,(this meant the ancient ones). Pitt houses, cliff dwelling and basketmakers are ways to describe their sites. The Anasazi reached their highest peak around the AD 1100 as evidenced by Aztec Ruins. around AD 1300s, the area was abandoned for a reason and is still under debate by archaeologists to this day.
