The most prominent geological form in the Espanola Valley, Black Mesa is held to be a sacred site by the pueblo Native Americans. In 1692, a bloody battle of the reconquest of New Mexico by Spanish forces occurred here.
Note: the mesa is strictly closed to hikers.
