A huge monolith stands a few miles east of
Acoma Pueblo and has been commonly identified by many visitors as "Enchanted Mesa". Enchanted Mesa stands approximately 400 feet above the surrounding plains. According to Acoma legend, it was inhabited by ancestral Acomas. One day, the people were tending the fields when a violent rain storm broke out. The rain washed away the access to the mesa leaving a young girl and her grandmother stranded on top. Rather than perish from starvation, the two leaped from its cliff walls.
