The Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano are found within the
El Malpais National Monument Area at an elevation of 8.000 feet. Some 5,000 years ago a lava spewing volcano created caverns that now contain perpetual formations of ice. Nearby, inactive Bandera Volcano rises 500 feet above the mountain valley. Self-guiding tours depart from the trading post south of Hwy 53. Wear comfortable shoes. Picnicking is permitted.
