Santa Fe National Forest. The southern Sangre de Cristo Range, with several 12.000 to 13,000 foot peaks, dominates the eastern half. Within the forest are Pecos Wilderness, the head waters of the
Pecos River and the Santa Fe Basin winter sports area. The 18-mile trip along Hwy 63 between Cowles and Pecos provides outstanding views of the forest's eastern section. In the portion west of the
Rio Grande are the Jemez Mountains, San Pedro Parks Wilderness, Chama Wilderness and and Dome Wilderness. Recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, horseback riding and such winter sports as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Fees are required for some developed areas.
