Canastota is located in Madison County off I90 15 miles east of Syracuse near Old Erie Canal State Park and near Oneida Lake.
Canastota is part of the Syracuse, New York metro area and is in the Central Region of the state.
Its name derives from Iroquoian for "lone pine" and early industries included the manufacture of knives and wheel rakes.
