One of 19th century
New York's most massive public works projects. Some 20,000 workers--Yankee engineers, Irish laborers, German gardeners, and native stonecutters--created the pastoral landscape of one of the largest city parks in the world, reaching from 59th to 110th and from Fifth Avenue to Central Park West - 840 acres of wooded landscaped grounds, gardens, woodlands, lakes, two skating rinks, a pool at 109th Street, and a carousel.
Buggy rides are also available. Recreation includes skating, bicycling, boating, horseback riding, fishing, and tennis.
Park rangers lead walking tours.
