Cohoes is located in Albany County 8 miles N of Albany along Highway 4 on the banks of the Hudson River near Troy. It is in the Central Region of the state. Cohoes is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, New York metro area. Its name derives from Algonquian term variously translated as "pine tree," "canoe falling," "parting of the waters" and "overshoot".
