Greenport is located in
Suffolk County on the eastern reaches of
Long Island between Long Island Sound and Gardiners Bay between Southold and East Marion along Highway 25 near
Shelter Island. It is in the
Southern Region of the state.
This was a 19th-century whaling port. The first line of the Long Island Railroad was laid from Long Island City to Greenport and it was a bootlegging area during Prohibition.
