Hamburg is located in Erie County 12 miles south of Buffalo between Blasdell and Eden along Highway 62 near Lake Erie and in the Western Region of the state.

According to local tradition, the hamburger was invented here in 1885 at the Hamburg Fair. When concessionaires Frank and Charles Menches ran out of pork sausage, they started making sandwiches with chopped beef.
