New Paltz is located in Ulster County 9 miles west of Poughkeepsie between Newburgh and Kingston along Highway 299 off I87 on the banks of the Wall Kill River in the Southern Region of the state. New Paltz was established by French Huguenots. Six stone houses built 1692-1712 stand on Huguenot Street as reminders of the original settlement.
