Located in
New York Harbor, the Statue was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States and is one of the most universal symbols of political freedom and democracy. The Statue, dedicated in 1886, was designated a National Monument in 1924. It was extensively restored for the centennial on July 4, 1986. The Museum of Immigration, located in the base, outlines the history of immigration into the US; also presented is an exhibit on the statue's history.
