From 1776, when Washington and his troops retreated through Westchester after their defeat on
Long Island, until 1783, when the British were finally expelled, the county was a battleground. After the Battle of
White Plains in October 1776, Westchest er became the war. This site has 3 monuments that mark Washington's stance during the battle, one at Chatterton Hill, and 2 on Battle Avenue. The famous battle was waged October 28, 1776.
