Benjamin Harrison

America's 23rd President, Benjamin Harrison, was born just west of Cincinnati in the Ohio River town of North Bend in 1833. He came from a long line of politicians including his grandfather who was also elected President--William Henry Harrison.

Harrison matriculated at Miami University in Oxford, graduating in 1852 at the age of 19. He took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar at age 21 and then moved to Indianapolis to begin his own practice.

Harrison entered politics, after leading several successful campaigns in the Civil War, with a failed bid for a Republican nomination for governor of Indiana in 1872. He did, however, win the U.S. Senate seat in 1881. Working through the ranks, he received his party's nomination for President in 1888, defeating incumbent president Grover Cleveland by 65 electoral votes. In a rematch of the two in 1892, Cleveland regained the Presidency.
