Greenville is located in
Darke County (of which it is the county seat) 30 miles northwest of
Dayton and 10 miles from the Indiana state line. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 13,099, an increase of 236 since 1990.
The town first established its pivotal location in America's heartland in 1793, when General "Mad" Anthony Wayne chose the site as his base to establish control over the Great Northwest Territory. It was here that Wayne's army constructed its headquarters, Fort Greene Ville, naming it after Wayne's war compatriot Major General Nathanael Greene of Rhode Island.
Outdoor lovers enjoy their trips to Grand Lake St. Marys and Grand Lake St. Marys State Park 30 miles to the north. In addition, golfers can take on Greenville Country Club, a private club but with a reciprocal guest agreement and featuring an 18-hole, 6,400-yard layout and White Springs Golf Club, public 9-hole facility built in 1937.
Other local attractions include the Garst Museum and Bear's Mill.
