Darke County

Darke county was formed in 1809, and was named after the Revolutionary War hero Gen. William Darke. It is located in southwestern Ohio on the Indiana border and calls Greenville its county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 54,063, an increase of 446 over the 1990 census.

Famous county residents include Phoebe Anne Mozee, also known as Annie Oakley. Her life as a sharp-shooter was heavily influenced by her father, who liked to hunt wild game in the mid- to late 1800s, and an older brother, with whom she often tagged along on forays into the nearby woods. Her first kill was a fox squirrel bagged on her first shot at age eight. Her second "kill" was her brother's hat which had been flung into the air as a challenge for the child prodigy.
