Springfield, founded in 1801 and established as a city in 1850, is located in east central Ohio in
Clark County (of which it is the county seat) about 40 miles west of
Columbus along Highway 68 and 41 on the banks of the Mad River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 65,568, a decrease of 4,919 since 1990.
