Vinton county is located in south central Ohio with McArthur acting as the county seat. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 12,362, an increase of 1,264 over the 1990 census.
This picturesque county is filled with treasures for the outdoor types. [waynenf] covers about two-thirds of the county while other recreational sites include Lake Hope and State Park and New Plymouth Zaleski State Forest in the northeastern portion of the state and Lake Rupert, which is fed by Little Raccoon Creek to the south.
Historic sites include the Ponn Humpback Covered Bridge near Wilkesville, the Hope Furnace near Zaleski and the Ratcliffe Mound near Londonderry.
