El Reno Oklahoma |
El Reno is located in central Oklahoma in Canadian County (of which it is the county seat) on the banks of the North Canadian River near the State Game Farm and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agriculture School. It is situated along historic Route 66. Many relics of the "Mother Road"-era can be found in the Canadian County Museum and elsewhere in the area.
Located on [i-40] and U.S. Highway 81 (the old Chisholm Trail), just west of Oklahoma City, the city is the site of old Fort Reno, much of which remains just west of town. The fort was instrumental in organizing the Oklahoma land runs. The area also contains a chapel built by German Prisoners of War in 1943.
A scenic portion of U.S. 81 runs south from El Reno through the Canadian River Valley.
Post-high school educational opportunities include Redlands Community College which is conveniently located at the intersection of I-40 and 81.
Museum buffs will enjoy the Canadian County Historical Museum.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 15,786, an increase of 372 since 1990.
