Stilwell is located in northeastern Oklahoma in southern Adair County (of which it is the county seat) east of Muskogee along U.S. Highway 59 and SR 51 about 7 miles from the Arkansas border. Outdoor recreation for the area is provided by Adair State Park, about a mile east of town, Cherokee Landing State Park, about 25 miles west-southwest and Lake Tenkiller and Lake Tenkiller State Park further south.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 2,978, an increase of 315 since 1990.
