Early settlers included Mennonites from Pennsylvania, whose descendants still use horses and carriages. The scenic surroundings include rolling hills and fertile farmland. The last of Ontario's covered bridges is a short distance east of Elmira in West Montrose. Visitors can enjoy live harness racing at the Elmira Raceway between March and November.
