Hutchison House Museum |
Completed in 1837 for pioneer physician Dr. John Hutchison, who was also a magistrate and one of Peterborough's most prominent citizens. Hutchinson died in 1847 after having contracted typhus from a patient during a local epidemic. The house and gardens have been restored to their original 1840s condition and display period furnishings, medical instruments, books, and herb gardens.
Also on the grounds is a museum which exhibits the memorabilia of Hutchinson's cousin, Sir Sandford Fleming, knighted for his achievements in 1897. Fleming, chief engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and builder of the Intercolonial Railway, is best known as the originator of Standard Time, and the design of Canada's first postage stamp. Items on display include his surveying equipment and maps.
Tours are offered by costumed guides, and baking and cooking demonstrations are given on an open hearth.
