Part of the Trent Canal System, Lindsay is the main gateway to the Kawartha Lakes recreation area. It became a farming and lumbering center following construction of a government dock and dam in 1844. Lindsay boasts the widest downstreet in Canada. It is home to the Kawartha Summer Theatre, antique shops, art galleries, six public golf courses, and a summer farmer's market.
