Search Peterborough Ontario

Since its modest inception in 1867, this museum has developed into a modern facility housing over 22,000 artifacts that include a large collection of textiles, military artifacts, ceramics, and domestic items. A series of galleries feature historical displays on early settlers, industry, society, and homelife.

City archives contain extensive records of the town's past; highlights include the nationally significant Balsillie Collection of Roy Studio Images, consisting of over 300,000 glass plate and film negatives of Peterborough and the surrounding area from 1896 to 1992. An album (herbarium) containing pressed flowers and plant specimens collected and mounted in 1891 from the Douro/Lakefield area by Catharine Parr Traill includes handwritten notes and labels. The City Archives are closed to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays; access to the archives is by appointment only. The museum is open daily; admission to both is free to the public.
