This small community was settled by Mennonites from Pennsylvania after the American Revolution. It was originally called Jakobstettel, or `little town of many Jacobs.` Visitors can still see horse-drawn carriages along village streets that are lined with more than 100 shops of local retailers and artisans. Sightseeing excursions on the Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway are available, and the Maple Syrup museum tells the history of maple syrup production.
