Archaeological research along the Columbia River has revealed that large populations of Native Americans inhabited The Dalles area for at least the last 11,000 years. Celilo Falls was one of the most important Indian fisheries in North America, and the area continues to have great religious significant for Indians, who regularly observe the first salmon and spring root ceremonies.Since the Dalles occupied a strategic river location, Indians often travelled great distances to meet for purposes of trading. Archaeologists have excavaged a nearby site and recovered artifcats originating as far away as the Great Lakes area. Horsethief Lake State Park contains a large concentration of prehistoric rock art, both pictographs and petroglyphs. "Tsagaglalal - She Who Watches" is one of the most famous rock art designs along the Columbia.
