Galice is located in
Josephine County, northwest of
Grants Pass, between
Merlin and Almeda along Galice Hwy. Established in 1852, Galice was once known as "Galiceburg" which was a short distance up Galice Creek from Skull Bar or Lower Town at the mouth of the creek. The present community is downstream from the creek on a bench above the
Rogue River. Galice was established when rich placer gold finds brought large number of miner families into the area. One of the largest mines in Southern Oregon, the Old Channel, is in this area among many others.
Today, still standing in town is the Ed Friday house, built around 1900. Also located nearby is the famous Hellgate Canyon (on Galice Hwy.), where the famous movie "River Runs Wild" and many other Westerns were filmed.
Other attractions: Indian Mary Park, Historic Pottsville, Historic Haines Apple Tree and plenty of fishing and rafting.
