Established in January of 1856. The county covers 641 square miles. The Seat of Josephine County is Grants Pass. The county population on July 1, 1999, was 74,919, an increase of 12,270 over the 1990 census.
Interstate 5 runs through the county, which is also connected to the Oregon Coast by Highway 199 through the Illinois Valley. Cave Junction is the gateway to the Kamiopsis Wilderness and Merlin is the starting point for many trips down the Rogue River.
