Visitors to the newly opened Guide Dogs for the Blind in the sleepy town of Boring are surprised to learn it houses nearly 150 animals, all quietly learning the skills necessary to guide their blind owners through a hazardous world.
The pups, bred in the organization's headquarters in San Rafael CA are raised by youngsters and adults throughout the western United States. Upon reaching maturity, the pups are sent to the campus for harness training.
Tours are available by appointment and include a look at the veterinary clinic and the kitchen, which prepares nearly 200 pounds of dog food every day. In the grooming facility, visitors can see dogs in the washtubs or in the drying room.
