The refuge is an important nesting area for greater sandhill cranes and waterfowl, and comprises 31,000 acres of large natural marshes and wooded uplands. Recreation on the refuge consists of wildlife observation, study, and photography, as well as waterfowl hunting and fishing. The refuge is located 25 miles north of
Chiloquin and 7 miles east of
Highway 97 on Silver Lake Highway.
