The forest and Crooked River National Grassland, located within the forest, occupy 959,290 acres at the center of Oregon. Both areas have rimrock viewpoints, deep canyons, and other fascinating geologic landsforms. The largest number of visitors come during hunting season in late summer and fall.
Small campgrounds, usually close to streams, are common. Fishing, camp facilities, and water recreation are available at Delintment Lake, Antelope Reservoir, Walton Lake, and Haystack Reservoir. Rockhounding is popular and forest roads lead to several sites containing thunder eggs, jasper, and other stones. Mountain bikers enjoy Lookout Mountain and Round Mountain as places to get away crowds.
