Ontario is located in
Malheur County south of
Baker City along
Interstate 84, situated on the Idaho/Oregon border near
Nyssa and
Vale. The Ontario area, in an agricultural belt along the
Snake River, has many reservoirs with good
Fishing and
Hunting and Shooting.
Ontario is the largest city in Malheur County, and is also in the area known as Oregon's Western Treasure Valley. This land has spacious, rugged areas, as well as prime agricultural growing land. Ontario grows onions, russet potatoes, sugar beets and peppermint. The people in this part of Oregon have diverse cultural backgrounds, such as Japanese, Basque, Mexican, American Indian and European. There are several festivals in the area, such as Ontario's Japanese Obon Festival, the Mexican Cinco De Mayo, and Thunderegg Days at Nyssa. Rock hounding is a favorite pastime, and you may even find Oregon's state rock, the thunderegg.
