Chateau-Sur-Mer |
This ornate Victorian mansion was built in 1852 for William S Wetmore, who made his fortune in China trade. The house, with property extending to the sea, was modeled after a French chateau, hence its name, "Castle by the Sea." Although it was luxurious and unusally large for its day, the structure was enlarged in 1872. The huge granite building's library and dining room, designed by Luigi Fullini, are decorated in Renaissance style with leather and lavishly carved walnut. Other notable features include a Turkish sitting room, the French-style ballroom with sliding mirrored doors and a Chinese "moongate" in the the south wall. Open daily May through September; Saturday and Sunday in April and October.
