Marble House |
Started in 1888 for William Vanderbilt, grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the steamship and railroad mogul, it has 500,000 cubic feet of marble and is one of the most sumptuous of Newport's cottages. It was completed in 1892 by Richard Morris Hunt, it takes its name from the many kinds of marble used in its construction and decoration. It has all original furnishings. New additions include the restored gothic room and the colorful Chinese Teahouse overlooking the Cliff Walk and the Atlantic Ocean.
