Barnwell is located in
Barnwell County, of which it is the county seat. The town is situated southwest of
Columbia between Williston and
Allendale along Highway 278 near the Salkehatchie River. Barnwell is located east of the Department of Energy's Savannah River Plant.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,298, an increase of 43 since 1990.
Barnwell County offers the best of urban and rural living. With thousands of acres preserved in its natural state, recreational activities are endless, from fishing and hunting to swimming and boating. Nature lovers can enjoy the unique Pocomoke River and cypress swamp, abundant wildlife, the Smoky Mountains, the beaches, and the famous ponies of Assateague Island. For golfers, there are ten championship courses offering 180 holes.
