Barnwell is located in
Barnwell County, of which it is the county seat. The town is situated southwest of
Columbia between Williston and
Allendale along Highway 278 near the Salkehatchie River. Barnwell is located east of the Department of Energy's Savannah River Plant.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 5,298, an increase of 43 since 1990.
